Creating and Becoming a Safe Space
"Social work is not just a career choice for me. It is a calling! "
Where I have been and where I am going?
Growing up in Belmonte, Bahia, Brazil, and spending time in a children’s home before being adopted has shaped my passion for helping others. I will also be the first in my biological family to go to college, which makes this opportunity even more meaningful to me.
I want to use my personal experiences and my education to support children who feel unheard, provide stability to families in crisis, and work toward creating safer and more supportive communities. Social work is not just a career choice for me, it is a calling that comes from my own journey and the people who helped change my life.
I will be attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where I plan to study Social Work and eventually earn my master’s degree in the field. My goal is to use my education to advocate for children and families who face difficult circumstances, especially those involved in foster care and international adoption.
"FGN stood out to me because it recognizes students’ resilience and supports their future goals, which made me feel that my story and aspirations truly matter." - Irandira
What are you most looking forward to as you begin your college journey?
As I begin my college journey, I am most looking forward to gaining the knowledge, independence, and experiences that will prepare me to make a meaningful difference in the world. I am excited to challenge myself academically and continue growing into a stronger and more confident individual. I am especially excited to learn from professors, participate in community service opportunities, and connect with others who share my passion for helping families and children in need. College represents a new beginning and a chance to continue building a future that once felt impossible.

What about the FGN scholarship program stood out to you when you decided to apply?
- What stood out to me most about the FGN scholarship program was its focus on supporting students who have overcome challenges and are committed to making a positive impact in their communities. FGN is more than just financial assistance, it represents a community that encourages leadership, perseverance, and service.
- As someone who has experienced hardship, adoption, and cultural transition, I deeply connect with FGN’s mission of empowering students to pursue higher education and give back. The program’s emphasis on community involvement and personal growth aligns closely with my own experiences, especially my involvement in church and community service. FGN stood out to me because it recognizes students’ resilience and supports their future goals, which made me feel that my story and aspirations truly matter.
