Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? Reach out to scholarships@FG2Next.org for support.

Do I have to be a first-generation college student to apply?

No. All students from diverse backgrounds are welcome to apply. While our organization is called First Generation to the Next, our mission is to continue a legacy of education and prosperity for all students—not just first-generation students.

When should I apply?

Apply as early as possible to ensure you meet the deadline and have time to gather strong materials (such as essays and recommendation letters). Don’t wait until the last minute.

I have a low GPA. Should I still apply?

Yes. We use a holistic review process. While a minimum GPA of 2.0 is preferred, we understand that life circumstances can affect academic performance. The personal statement is a great opportunity to share your story, experiences, and goals.

Can I apply if I’m taking a gap year?

Students must be current high school seniors. If you are taking a gap year, you may not be eligible unless otherwise stated in the scholarship guidelines.

Can I use AI to write my personal statement?

While we recognize AI tools can support writing, your essay should reflect your own voice and story. Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) should not be used to write or draft the essay. Grammar and editing tools (e.g., Grammarly) are allowed for proofreading and clarity.

Can I reapply if I applied last year but didn’t win?

If the scholarship is open to repeat applicants, you may reapply as long as you still meet eligibility criteria. Check the current year's requirements for details.

Can I submit my application after the deadline?

No. Late applications will not be accepted in fairness to those who submitted on time.

Can the scholarship be used at any university?

Yes. The scholarship may be applied to any accredited college or university in the U.S. We encourage you to check with your school’s financial aid office regarding their process for external scholarships. If specific information is needed in the award letter, contact us at scholarships@FG2Next.org

Do I need to attend a specific high school to be eligible?

No. Students from any U.S. high school may apply.

How many students receive the Legacy Forward Scholarship each year?

This varies based on funding and the applicant pool. We aim to award as many deserving students as possible.

How do I get my high school transcript?

Contact your school’s main office, registrar, or academic counselor. They will assist you in requesting and obtaining your transcript.

If I’m selected, how will scholarship funds be disbursed?

Funds will be sent directly to the accredited U.S. college or university you choose to attend. Disbursement occurs after enrollment is confirmed for your first semester.

Is there an age requirement to apply for this scholarship?

Applicants must be high school seniors at the time of applying. Age is not a determining factor in the selection process. However, if you are under 18 years old, a parent or guardian must sign a consent form for your application to be eligible.

Is the scholarship based on income or financial need?

No. The Legacy Forward Scholarship is not based on household income or financial need.

What time is the application due on the deadline date?

Applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM CST on the posted deadline. A confirmation email will be sent upon submission. If you do not receive one, contact us at scholarships@FG2Next.org

When and how will I be notified of the results?

Application review begins after the scholarship closes. Applicants are typically notified within 10–12 weeks of the deadline via the email used in the application. Please ensure your email address is accurate and monitored.

When should I request a letter of recommendation?

Please ask your recommender at least three weeks before the scholarship deadline to ensure they have enough time to write a thoughtful letter.

Who can I ask for a letter of recommendation?

We recommend requesting a letter from someone who knows you well and can speak to your character, growth, and potential. Common choices include teachers, mentors, employers, community leaders, and school counselors.
